Driver killed, Texas HS band members hurt when bus falls into ravine

A charter bus carrying more than 40 Texas high school students home from a trip to Disney World plunged into an Alabama ravine early Tuesday morning, leaving at least one dead and more than a dozen injured, local authorities said.

The bus was carrying students returning from a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida, Malone said. The other bus was not involved in the crash and arrived home Tuesday afternoon.

News 5 confirms that Harry Caligone of Houston, Texas died of injuries sustained in the crash after the tour bus fell into the deep ravine under the interstate.

Interstate 10 was shut down in both directions about 20 miles east of Mobile, AL, during the time helicopters transported the injured to about 10 area hospitals. She had pain in her legs and bruising but was otherwise unscathed, and taken to a hospital for evaluation, he said.

17-year-old Bianca Torres plays percussion for the Channelview High School Band.

According to WKRG-TV, a deputy suffered minor injuries while pulling people from the bus.

A photo posted on the band's Facebook page just hours before the crash showed a large group posting outside Disney World.

The bus' front axle appeared separated from the vehicle and at least two doors to luggage compartments had been ripped off the side. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

According to a Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report, the previous crash involving a fatality took place in May 2017 in Houston, when one of the company's buses failed to yield the right of way as it turned left and fatally struck a pedestrian who was in a crosswalk.

Sheriff Huey Moss Mack says both lanes on the interstate have been closed.

One person was hospitalized in critical condition and five others were listed in serious condition, Baldwin County Sheriff's officials said.

Jesus Tejeda came upon the scene as he drove to work, finding dozens of police cars and ambulances stopped on the highway near the overpass. He said he did not know how many passengers were injured, but said they were "numerous".

In the video, multiple first responders surround an overturned charter bus after it apparently crashed into a ravine.

A second bus carrying students from the Disney trip is continuing on to Houston.

The last victim was extricated from the crash shortly before 9 a.m. (10 a.m. ET), Mack said.

The creek runs through the ravine, and there is water in the creek, but the bus did not land in the water, said Baldwin County Sheriff's Maj.

"At this time, details are limited", spokesman Mark Kramer told the Chronicle.
