The police said Alagesan had gone to meet Aswini to patch up with her, which ultimately turned into a tragedy. The accused was stalking the girl for a very long time and was insisting her to marry him.

The 26-year-old stalker not only stabbed the girl but also slit her throat. But he instead stabbed her and slit her throat as she fell to the ground.

Although Aswini was rushed to a private hospital by her college mates, she was declared brought dead by the doctors. The police are continuing their investigation with respect to what might have been the motive behind the crime in addition to examining the CCTV footages from the locality.

Police inspector George Miller of MGR Nagar station said: "Aswini had come to the police station with her mother seeking help...(they wanted us to) counsel Alagesan as he was troubling them..."

Alagesan, who sustained bleeding injuries, was admitted to a hospital after he was arrested by the police.

The police further said that she had filed a complaint with the Maduravoyal Police on 16th February and they had let Alagesan off with a warning since the girl's family did not want an FIR to be filed.

Meanwhile, Alagesan's sister Paripooranam said that the two were, in fact, in love.

The accused was caught by members of the public, tied up and handed over to the police. "They are unable to take the rejection and destroy what can not be theirs", HT quoted her as saying.
