Biplab Deb to be sworn in as Tripura CM today

The Tripura government will form an expert committee regarding implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations for the state government employees, the new Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said today. Governor Tathagata Roy also administered the oath of office and secrecy to eight others including BJP's Jishnu Dev Varma as Deputy Chief Minister and the octogenarian IPFT chief N.C. Debbarman.

In other decisions, the Bharatiya Janata Party government, as per its poll promise, chose to rename Agartala Airport after late Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur (August 1908 - May 1947).

Chief Minister Deb, the incumbent Tripura BJP President, and all his Cabinet colleagues became ministers for the first time in a border state where for decades the BJP virtually did not exist. The BJP had demolished the communist citadel of Tripura, winning a two-thirds majority with ally IPFT and ending 25 years of uninterrupted rule of the CPI (M)-led Left Front.

The ceremony was attended by senior BJP leaders, including LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Rajnath Singh, besides several union ministers and BJP CMs.

The Left Front on Saturday announced it will not contest the election to the Charilam Assembly constituency on Monday alleging post-poll violence.

Deb succeeded Manik Sarkar as the CM of the state.

The CPI (M) managed to bag 16 seats in the 60-member assembly.
