Arsenal hopeful on new Wilshere deal despite contract impasse

Wilshere has yet to agree a new contract with his deal coming to an end in the summer, and the Metro claims that the Gunners have asked the England global to take a cut in wages.

'I know the manager trusts me here.

"Not just the England manager, but the Arsenal manager made it clear what he wanted from me".

Now, he is fit and firing on all cylinders and he proved his class with a brilliant performance against AC Milan on Thursday, as Arsenal sealed their place in the Europa League quarter-finals. He wanted me to prove my fitness.

'I have done that and he has been true to his word. "I want him to stay and be linked to the club for the future and I hope he will do it", said Wenger.

"It was hard, it was tough". It is always an honour to play for my country, I have said that many times. I believed in myself and I believed in my ability.

His contract is up at the end of the season and there are mixed messages coming from Wilshere and Wenger as to where negotiations now stand.

Everton, Juventus and AC Milan are among a number of clubs monitoring Wilshere's contract situation closely with the former Bournemouth loanee's contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign. "We don't think it's bad but he cramped up and he couldn't go on".

The Gunners brought home a 2-0 lead following a strong away performance in Milan in the first leg of the round-of-16 tie, and managed to beat the Italian side 3-1 at the Emirates despite going a goal down.

"I haven't seen it again", Wenger told reporters in the post-match press conference.
