Anti-wall crowd shouts at border crossing before Trump visit

Following his tour of the prototypes, Trump spoke to members of the military at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The trip Tuesday opened with a viewing of the eight options that his administration has selected for testing - and that might serve as his long-promised wall along the border of the US and Mexico, if Congress decides to allot the funds to do so. Additionally, Caddell, W.G. Yates, KWR Construction Inc. of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and ELTA North America Inc. of Annapolis Junction, Maryland, won bids for mock-ups made from materials other than concrete.

"You have to have see-through".

"You're not going to see them climbing over this wall too easily", Trump said. "You have to know what's on the other side of the wall".

He also said that he preferred models that had a rounded top that would make scaling the wall more hard. "No wall!" as honking cars and buses cheered them on. His first stop was Otay Mesa, where the president's focus was on the border wall. He said illegal crossings dropped after those fences, some of which are made of scrap metal, were built.

On Twitter, Trump said the wall will pay for itself, a shift from his oft-repeated statements during his 2016 presidential campaign that Mexico would pay. "I think Rex will be much happier now but I really appreciate his service but with Mike we've had a very good chemistry right from the beginning".

At the protest, passersby such as José Gonzalez, 21, stopped to snap a photo of people holding signs, including one that read: "Wall off Putin!" The terminal is a few miles from the border-wall prototypes. Attorney General Jeff Sessions followed up with a speech in Sacramento that was immediately denounced by Democratic Gov.

The Justice Department last week sued to block a trio of California laws created to protect people living in the US illegally.

Jerry Brown has "done a very poor job running California", slamming the Democrat for immigration and tax policy. Schwab said they inflated the number of suspected criminals that they said eluded capture in recent California raids because of warnings from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, whom Trump lambasted yet again in San Diego.

The president said cooperation with Mexico is a "crucial" element of border security.

Trump also insisted that California political leaders actually want walls, despite what they say in opposition. "We have to have a couple of disagreements before we get there".

Protests were also held on the Mexican side, in Tijuana.

Setting foot for the first time on California soil since taking the oath of office, Trump on Tuesday will face a largely unfriendly crowd in a state that voted almost 62 percent for Hillary Clinton and where only 22 percent of residents polled said they approved of the job he was doing.

Will Trump find any friendly faces during his visit?

Tuesday, officials brought the president to the border to inspect the prototypes showing possible designs for a wall across the U.S. -Mexico border.

San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Sandra Dibble is reporting on the scene in Tijuana where authorities have restricted access to the fence near the border wall prototypes. There are reports of large containers that will be placed to block the view of people in Mexico seeing Trump, reportedly for security reasons. The event was organized in part by the ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties. "They have the highest taxes in the United States". "What we need is action to ensure DACA recipients and their families are safe from deportation".

The issue has led to heightened tensions between California and the Trump administration.
