Reports say Hosmer signs with Padres

Eric Hosmer's extended run as a free agent appears to be nearing its end.

Over his seven-year career in the Majors, Hosmer owns a.284 average with 206 doubles, 16 triples, 127 home runs and 566 RBIs.

Hosmer, a four-time Gold Glove victor, posted a.318/.385/.498 slashline last season with 94 RBIs, 98 runs scored and six steals. Myers, who played with Hosmer briefly in Single-A while in the Royals' system, has said he would be happy to move if it meant the Padres got Hosmer.

Hosmer's deal will pay him $144 million if he stays all eight years, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Although he only has limited experience at Petco Park in his career, the first baseman has absolutely raked.

Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett won his salary-arbitration case, giving players a final 12-10 margin over clubs this year, only their fourth winning record since 1996.

Veteran right-hander Chris Young also came to the Padres this offseason after most recently pitching three seasons for the Royals, calling Hosmer "one of my all-time favorite teammates" who brings "a competitive fire" that will be much-welcomed. He hit a combined.235 with stole 29 bases. The Reds offered $5.1 million.
