Pence did not stand for Korean delegation at Olympics opening ceremonies

The official said Pence and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, while watching speed skating together on Saturday night, discussed intensifying sanctions.

"The North Koreans should understand that for a summit or any kind of serious talks to occur, Moon needs to be able to take something to Washington - something that addresses denuclearization", he said before the North's invitation to Moon was announced.

In the second row were seated North Korea's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong-Nam, and Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

After Kim Jong Un held out an olive branch in his New Year speech, North Korea agreed in January with South Korea to send athletes, coaches and others to the Olympics.

Moon's visit is highly possible, if South Korea and the United States downscale their military exercises, while DPRK agrees to freeze its nuclear program and stop testing missiles, he added.

Moon shared details with Pence of his meeting with North Korean leaders, but did not talk about the invitation to talks in Pyongyang.

Moon responded to the invitation by suggesting the two countries "should accomplish this by creating the right conditions", adding that talks between North Korea and the United States were also needed, and requested that North Korea be more active in talking with the US, according to Kim Eui-kyeom.

Fake Kim admitted that he and Trump substitute Dennis Alan had failed to get close enough to interact with athletes, including the two Koreas who marched together behind the blue-and-white unification flag.

The pair signed a peace declaration calling to end the armistice with a permanent treaty, but progress stalled and the two sides remain in a stalemate.

Moon had already shaken hands with Kim Yo Jongand Kim Yong Nam at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday in Pyeongchang.

The Games has seen better ties between the two Koreas despite tensions over the North's nuclear programme.

An inter-Korean summit would be the third of its kind, after Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong Il met the South's Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007 respectively, both of them in Pyongyang. "One of the main reasons North Korean athletes don't defect is due to their families back in North Korea", Benjamin Young, a doctoral candidate at George Washington University who has researched sports in North Korea, told ABC News' Mae Joo.

Moon's office says the North Korean delegates were served traditional food from the Gangwon province, a mountainous coastal area that's home to the Olympic towns of Pyeongchang and Gangneung.

She is part of an official North Korean delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and she attended the opening ceremony of the Games on Friday. Seafood, once a major North Korean export, was now more widely available at home after United Nations sanctions banned these exports in August.

Before leaving Japan for Korea, Pence announced that the USA would unveil in coming days "the toughest and most aggressive round of economic sanctions on North Korea ever".

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon (R) shakes hands with Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, during a lunch meeting in Seoul on February 11, 2018.

"There's a lot of speculation as to what the North Korean strategy is right now".
