Juventus rise to top of Serie A

Referee Marco Guida initially awarded Fiorentina a penalty in the 18th minute after Giorgio Chiellini appeared to handle the ball.

Jordan Veretout stood over the penalty for a full three minutes, but he never got the chance to take it after the referee signalled an intervention from the video assistant referee, and awarded a free-kick to the visiting team for an offside infringement.

The winger scored a lovely freekick in the win against his former club, and after netting his fourth goal in the league, the 23-year-old celebrated wildly.

The win at Artemio Franchi Stadium on Friday was Juve's eighth straight in Serie A, reports Efe.

The 23-year-old scored the Turin giants' first goal as he curled in a left-footed free-kick in the 56th minute on Friday.

Juve - who have kept 15 clean sheets in their last 16 games - have gone two points above Napoli, who host Lazio in their game in hand on Saturday (19:45 GMT).

A couple of weeks ago Liverpool's FA Cup clash with West Brom descended into farce as the referee used VAR three times in the first half alone.

Fiorentina continued to threaten a goal of their own, with Buffon called into action 70 minutes in, charging off his line to deny the home side with his feet.

After getting on the end of a Chiellini through ball, the ex-Napoli marksman coolly slotted his right-footed shot low into the bottom right corner to celebrate Gianluigi Buffon's 500th league game for the club. I think certain reactions ought to be avoided, but that's part of football.

"Now we must regroup for the Champions League". I've always been grateful to Fiorentina, and always will, for the way they looked after me and helped me develop, but I made a career choice and now I play for another team.

Fiorentina remain in 11th position on 31 points after their third loss in four games.
