Sisters Uncut took to Twitter after their protest to relay the experience, and explain that they believe May's imminent Domestic Violence and Abuse Bill, "will criminalise survivors while distracting from devastating funding cuts to domestic violence services nationwide".

Stars dressed mainly in black in a show of support for the fight against sexual harassment as The Shape of Water topped the nominations list.

Actress Joanna Lumley opened the awards, praising the determination to eradicate the abuse of women the world over.

The National Film and Television School (NFTS), which counts directors Lynne Ramsay and David Yates, and animator Nick Park, among its alumni, was recognised for providing training for the next generation of creative talent, many of whom go on to win BAFTAs themselves.

At tonight's EE British Academy Film Awards Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was named Best Film and Outstanding British Film, with Martin McDonagh winning Original Screenplay, Sam Rockwell taking Supporting Actor, and Frances McDormand receiving the BAFTA for Leading Actress.

She is one of the few performers who has achieved the Triple Crown of Acting: An Academy Award for Fargo, a Tony Award for Good People, and an Emmy Award for Olive Kitteridge.

"It's true that times are changing, and we must recognise the fact that numerous successful BAME candidates were nominated for their respective awards in the more recent part of the BAFTAs' extensive history". "In those dark and uncertain days he held the line for honour and integrity and freedom", Oldman said of Churchill.

Among other female celebrities who chose to not adhere to the all-noir dress code was Frances McDormand, in a long-sleeved, print-heavy dress, which she pointed out herself while accepting her Best Actress award for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Pixar's record-breaking Mexican-based animation Coco won the Animated feature award, while South Korean drama The Handmaiden won Best Foreign Film.

"Three Billboards", the monster fantasy "The Shape of Water" and the World War II flag-waver "Darkest Hour" are front-runners for the British prizes, considered a key indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Oscars in two weeks' time.
