Toyota Avalon First Look: The Next Big Toyota

Toyota Avalon First Look: The Next Big Toyota

Drivers will appreciate the standard passive and active safety benefits through Toyota Safety Sense, Avalon's handling has been refined with Adaptive Variable Suspension, also a Toyota first, that, quite positively, has Avalon outperforming its peers in the full-size arena. The design is a careful rehash of the Camry, with XSE and Touring models ready for the sporty given their "more aggressive" stance.

The more useful changes for consumers are inside the cabin; the new interior offers more luxury touches including real wood trim courtesy of Yamaha, as well as aluminum accents. Other brands such as Ford have also started offering support for Amazon Alexa as built-in auto features.

If fuel economy takes a higher priority, the 2019 Avalon Hybrid has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a battery-electric propulsion system.

The 2019 Avalon's is very angularly styled, and although it lacks the Lexus's cotton-reel grille, there are more than enough similarities to suggest the design team was phoning this one in. A similar setup in the new Camry Hybrid earns 47 mpg combined, but figures for the new Toyota Avalon Hybrid are still to be determined.

Speaking to MacRumours, the company said all new Toyota and Lexus vehicles with Entune 3.0 and Enform 2.0 multimedia systems will include support for CarPlay.

In a welcome addition, Toyota now offers Apple CarPlay and compatibility with Amazon's Alex and smart watches in addition to its proprietary Entune infotainment system.

Plug in an iPhone and the 9-inch capacitive touchscreen will show Apple's CarPlay interface instead.

The 2019 Avalon, which is produced in Kentucky, will go on sale in late spring of 2018, according to Toyota's press release. The XLE and Limited trims feature a front fascia (absolutely) dominated by horizontal lines, while the XSE and Touring trims have a different front fascia, (absolutely) dominated by a black plastic honeycomb pattern. Other features such as Qi wireless charging, three front and two rear USB charging ports and front and rear cupholders and phone cradles are standard across the range.

Safety also gets a bump and the new sedan is fitted with 10 airbags, adaptive cruise control with pre-collision alert, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist with automatic steering, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and automatic highbeams.
