Smartphones with in-display fingerprint sensor showcased at CES 2018

It is notable that in-display fingerprint sensor will surely affect the thickness phone.

Chinese smartphone player, Vivo, showcased its first smartphone to feature in-display fingerprint scanning technology.

As for the technology behind it, Vivo provided the scheme above, which coincides with Synaptics Clear ID FS9500 sensor workings, aided by a dedicated interface that lights up when finger scanning is needed, but stays put when you are using the phone in a regular manner.

It will be interesting to see how the new biometric scanning technology will affect the smartphone usage and the industry trends.

Vivo, which says the phone will enter a full consumer production run, has positioned the sensor in the most logical place, where Home buttons once resided. These fingerprint sensors can be embedded inside the display and will be scratch-proof as well waterproof. The Synaptics, the Clear ID in-display fingerprint sensors magically activate in the display only when needed. The new model may come with thinner bezels as the fingerprint sensor will move under the display. The phone is also said to sport iPhone X-esque notch on the top.

It's a similar story with Samsung's latest flagship smartphones, although it has shifted the fingerprint sensor to the rear of its devices rather than dispense with it completely.

At the time when Face recognition technology is replacing the fingerprint sensor, Vivo wants to revolutionize the fingerprint sensor again.

Before this launch, last month, Synaptics announced that a "Tier 1" manufacturer will be introducing the said technology at CES 2018. The technology aims to offer better and more convenient fingerprint authentication experience in future smartphones. A fingerprint scanner under the display has not yet launched in any commercially available smartphone.

"Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience".
