Serena Williams to skip this year's Australian Open

Serena Williams to skip this year's Australian Open

On January 4, the tennis champ shared her decision to withdraw from the 2018 Australian Open, and offered a heartfelt explanation as to why.

Serena Williams just announced that she will not be participating at this year's Australian Open. She has played just once in public since, losing to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi last week, but was still hopeful of making a remarkable return at the Australian Open until she admitted defeat a week ahead of the event.

Serena Williams will not play in Australian Open for another reason - American after last year's victory in Melbourne was on maternity leave, and after the resumption of a career do not have time to get in shape. However, she chose to bow out of the tournament just four months after giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia. Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley expressed his admiration for her efforts to return to the game she loves.

"The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again", she said.

There are also doubts over the fitness of Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal and Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka, who won the title in 2014. A key motivation for her is to match Court, who boasts 24 major titles and is renowned as the most successful player in Grand Slam history, but this must now wait until the French Open at the earliest. "I've been in constant contact with Serena and her team and know this is why she has pushed it and pushed it until the eleventh hour to make her final decision". No. 1-ranked Simona Halep and No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki are bidding to win their first Grand Slam singles titles.

Williams a year ago beat sister Venus in the final, and later revealed she played the tournament despite knowing she was pregnant.
