See Teacher Get Handcuffed After Criticizing School Superintendent's Raise

A Louisiana middle school teacher was removed from a Vermillion Parish school board meeting in handcuffs Monday evening after she questioned why the school district superintendent was receiving a $38,000 raise when rank-and-file teachers and support staff haven't gotten a pay raise in years.

"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person of leadership getting any type of raise", Hargrave was seen saying in a YouTube video.

Fontana told Hargrave that the public comments section of the meeting was not to be used as a question-and-answer session, KATC reported. After being called on a second time, when Hargrave tried, once again, to ask a question, she was told to leave.

"He's putting her in handcuffs right now", a man can be heard saying on a video taken from inside the meeting room.

School superintendent Jerome Puyau, the man whose potential pay raise was being discussed in the meeting, said that no charges were filed by him or the board against Hargrave. She has since bonded out.

"Stop resisting", the officer warns Hargrave as he handcuffs her.

The superintendent's pay raise would "basically be taking money out our pockets", she said.

Teacher Deyshia Hargrave spoke up during public comment and said, "You're making our jobs more hard".

Local reports say Fontana was unfamiliar with the board and its members before the nomination, but his selection was made by Fontana in an effort to split a deadlock vote on approving the raise for Puyau.

Fontana, who voted in favor of the final contract, said the board employs a city marshal to provide security during meetings.

The teacher was booked into jail last night, even though the superintendent told KATC shortly after the meeting that he had called to inform police that the system didn't want any charges pressed.

Hargrave has yet to comment on her removal.

The 74 was unable to reach the marshal's office or the school district Tuesday morning.

The station also reported that it is unclear whether the marshal acted on his own volition or was instructed to arrest Hargrave by a school board member.
