Sam's Club Stores Quietly Closing Across the Country

The news broke on the same day that parent-company Walmart announced in a Tweet its plans to raise starting wages for hourly employees to $11, expand benefits and offer workers a "one-time bonus".

But while the praise was pouring in, something else was happening.

Wal-Mart Stores using the windfall the GOP just gave Corporate America to score a public-relations coup, with a strategic move that would have been smart even without a tax cut. Some of the details were filled in by notices posted on state government websites in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.

Walmart will close 63 of its 660 Sam's Clubs over the next few weeks, with some shut already.

Walmart declined to comment when asked by InsideSources. Plus, some of the locations will be converted into e-commerce fulfillment centers - a decision that is also hard to criticize. An employee of the Goshen Sam's Club said employees are unable to offer comment.

He said there are several reasons for the closure, including the rise of online shopping. Ryan said on Twitter that the tax law "is helping improve people's lives". "We know what our customers need".

In a statement on Twitter, the company said: "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we've made a decision to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy".

"I used to come in once a week sometimes, or every other week", Den said. Some locations were closing immediately, while others, such as Prescott Valley, were expected to be open for a couple of weeks for a liquidation sale. "We will be closing some clubs, and we notified them today".

More than 60 Sam's Club stores are closing nationwide, but the one closest to Greater Williamsburg has survived. "We know this is hard news for our associates and we are working to place as many of them as possible at nearby locations". If you can manage to get credit for something you needed to do anyway, so much the better.

And hey, as both a worker and a shareholder, that makes me happy. He said it's obviously bad news because of the economic contributions the store brings, between property taxes and as a provider of jobs.

The company told Business Insider that it would refund customers' membership fees for the affected stores.

Other stores in New York, Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina are also reportedly being closed.

"The result is a vacuum", he said, "and what fills a vacuum is anger and rumors".

"The wage increases will make a big difference to Walmart's lowest-paid associates, but do not yet match Target's commitment to raise pay to $15 an hour", said the Organization United for Respect at Walmart.
