Packers hire Gutekunst as GM

Packers hire Gutekunst as GM

The Packers named Gutekunst the GM before another team could do it first. One of the rumors was that Green Bay could have Gutekunst split the GM role with Russ Ball.

Gutekunst was introduced to the Packers as an intern in the team's scouting department in the summe rof 1997, and was hired as a full-time employee by Ron Wolf on December 30, 1998. He became the director of college scouting in 2012, and the director of player personnel in 2016. Most notably is the Packers at least showing some interest in former scout/personnel man turned Seahawks general manager John Schneider. NFL Network reports he was also being considered for similar jobs in Houston and was there for an interview when the Packers made their offer.

The man replacing him will come from a similar mold, as the Packers chose to give in-house candidate Brian Gutekunst as their new general manager.

Gutekunst interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' GM job a year ago and was a finalist before withdrawing from consideration before the team hired FOX Sports TV analyst and former National Football League safety John Lynch.

Gutekunst, 44, played college football at UW-La Crosse.

Gutekunst may not have been the Packers' first choice. McCarthy recently received a one-year contract extension and is signed through the 2019 season, and Murphy said Tuesday that the new GM would have the power to hire and fire the head coach.
