Milwaukee misses cut for Amazon's second headquarters

Amazon has announced its shortlist of 20 proposals for its $5 billion second headquarters on Thursday with New York, Miami, and Los Angeles all making the cut. Applications from Columbus, Denver, Los Angeles, and Raleigh, North Carolina, were submitted by outside groups not typically bound by the same disclosure rules.

The list does include Toronto in Canada, but major USA centers including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington D.C. made up the list announced on Thursday, along with smaller cities such as Raleigh and Columbus, Ohio. The tech giant announced the finalists on Thursday morning. The city denied Freedom of Information Act requests from The Associated Press, sending 82 pages of non-disclosure agreements between Chicago, its nonprofit economic development arm and companies.

"We benefited from going through it", he said. Philly's point of contact at Amazon said a conference call will follow to discuss the next steps this week.

Some analysts forecast the most successful city would need to have at least 4 million residents to reach the scale Amazon sought and draw the required software talent it needs. Some Seattle residents have said Amazon's growth put strain on the city's transportation infrastructure and has contributed to a dramatic spike in housing costs - affecting low-income residents and favoring the tech elite.

Toronto is the lone city to make the top 20 outside of the U.S., despite original applicants from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The province said the premier's business adviser and former TD Bank CEO Ed Clark will help co-ordinate the government's response as the process moves ahead. Inc. said it will make a final selection sometime this year.

Worcester, New Bedford and Lawrence were among other MA cities that also made proposals but were not among the finalists. "All the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity". It spans 8.1 million square feet and includes 33 buildings.

The bid also touted Suffolk Downs.

If you're the type of person who's more into lists, here are the still-eligible cities in that format. "Those doors open to highly skilled economic immigrants and global students who can easily become permanent residents and citizens".

The commander-in-chief has railed against the company for allegedly skipping out on taxes, while bashing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his Washington Post.

Amazon HQ2 will be a complete headquarters, not a satellite office.

"Canadian cities are progressive, confident, and natural homes for forward-thinking global leaders", Trudeau wrote in his letter. "I think we've got an egalitarian process".
