Jon Gruden will replace Jack Del Rio as Raiders head coach

Jon Gruden will replace Jack Del Rio as Raiders head coach

When asked specifically if he was a candidate, Gruden replied: "Well, I think I am being considered, yes".

"He told me he loved me and appreciated all I did to get this program going in the right direction, but that he felt the need to change", Del Rio said.

Jon Gruden coached in Oakland for four good years, leading the Raiders to four consecutive.500-or-better seasons, including two playoff appearances and an AFC Championship. "Jon Gruden is going to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders".

Of course, that means current head coach Jack Del Rio would probably be out of a job. "But it's still pretty fresh (with Del Rio being fired)".

So why, considering how obvious the match is, is Gruden being coy about talk of his inevitable assumption of the Oakland head coaching job? Gruden still has one broadcast to do for ESPN's coverage of Wild Card weekend, but after that it's expected that he'll be named the Raiders' new coach. It seems all that needs to happen before Gruden's hiring is made official is the satisfaction of the Rooney rule and Gruden calling the National Football League playoff game for ESPN this coming weekend.

Sources have said Gruden has made calls to coaches around the National Football League in an attempt to put together his staff, although he has done the same in prior years but never followed through with an of the different opportunities that were presented to him.

Also on Sunday, Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area asked Raiders owner Mark Davis about the initial ESPN report saying the team would pursue Gruden.

On Monday, the Detroit Lions axed coach Jim Caldwell, who finished the season with a 9-7 record but missed the playoffs for the second time in three years.

His Tampa Bay Buccaneers did win a Super Bowl back in 2002.
