The attack took place near Havat Gilad, an unauthorized Israeli settlement outpost near Nablus.

Friedman, a supporter of West Bank settlements, was referring to payments to the families of imprisoned Palestinians, including those who have carried out attacks against Israelis, and to those killed while carrying out attacks.

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories - The Palestinian government attacked comments Wednesday by the United States ambassador to Israel blaming it for the failure of peace efforts, after an Israeli settler was killed in the occupied West Bank.

The settler was driving in his auto when he was shot at from a close range, thought to be from a vehicle passing by.

"Entrances and exits to and from the villages surrounding Nablus will be possible only after security checks", the military said in a statement.

Several other minor militant groups in the Gaza Strip followed the chorus and hailed the attack in the West Bank. The isolated community of a few hundred Israelis is located deep inside the West Bank.

"An Israeli father of six was killed last night in cold blood by Palestinian terrorists".

The spokesman of the Islamic movement held Israel responsible for the consequences and results of its "racist and extreme policies that are practiced against the Palestinian people".

Netanyahu later praised what he called Friedman's "unvarnished, straightforward" tweet. "Hamas praises the killers and PA laws will provide them financial rewards", Friedman said. "We also want to send out respect and appreciation to all countries, and nations, that stood against these violations, and voted for Palestine at the General Assembly". "This is not the path to peace!" he tweeted. There was no immediate comment from the Palestinian officials.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Mideast war.

All Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are seen as illegal under global law and major obstacles to peace as they are built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state.

The soldiers also summoned for interrogation the head of ad-Dar Educational Center, Engineer Samer Sari Nusseibeh, and the head of the Education Department in East Jerusalem, Samir Jibril.
