Houston Police: Arrested man with guns didn't plan to use them

- Houston police have arrested a man who had an arsenal of weapons in his downtown Houston hotel room.

Police initially planned to arrest the man for disorderly conduct.

The Hyatt Houston is in the heart of the city, and the man's room reportedly overlooked a planned New Years Eve celebration which was advertised on the hotel's website. Police also confiscated his truck and were searching it for more weapons. Senties said a trespassing charge would stem from the fact that the man refused to leave the hotel when told to do so.

Police Lieutenant Gordon Macintosh said police were called to the Hyatt Regency Hotel shortly after midnight to deal with a "drunk, belligerent suspect".

Local reports said an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a handgun, as well as a large quantity of ammo were found in the room.

The investigation is ongoing, but the incident started when authorities were dispatched to the hotel after an off-duty police officer working security called for backup in dealing with a heavily intoxicated man at the bar. The man was taken to jail to await questioning.

"At this point, our investigators do not believe there was any kind of intent by him to use the weapons or to cause any kind of issue".

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed via Twitter on December 31 that the situation is contained and that there are "no specific threats" to Houston.
