Girl's claim that man cut hijab with scissors is disputed by police

An 11-year-old girl claimed on Friday that a man twice tried to cut off her hijab as she walked to school with her brother.

There was a dip in police-reported hate crimes targeting Muslims in 2016, with 139 reported, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

"These allegations were extremely serious and not surprisingly, they received national and global attention", said a spokesperson for the Toronto police department.

"It's very rare for an allegation to be investigated and we later find out that it does not happen", spokesman Mark Pugash said Monday. "The investigation is concluded".

We are very thankful that this assault did not in fact happen.

Inside sources tell the CBC that the girl's story fell-apart when investigators began probing the alleged assault, speaking with bystanders and sifting through closed-camera surveillance footage.

Pugash declined to say whether the girl acknowledged it didn't happen.

The victim in this case was an 11-year-old girl who claimed a stranger had approached her as she was walking to school and attempted to cut off her hijab with a pair of scissors.

The alleged incident captured national attention after it was reported Friday and drew public condemnation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Noman had told reporters Friday she was "confused, scared" and "terrified". I'm frustrated and I'm angry, but I do believe in peace in Canada. She says she screamed and he ran away, but returned a few minutes later. "I am so proud to be a Canadian, and I want to give (the attacker) the same message", she said.

Amira Elghawaby, a human rights advocate based in Ottawa, said she was saddened to learn that the girl's story was not true, adding it will likely only serve to embolden "those who do hold discriminatory views of Muslims".
