Gerard Pique: Defender signs Barcelona contract extension

Spanish defender Gerard Pique reached an agreement to extend his contract with Barcelona until June 2022, the Catalan football club announced on Thursday.

As part of his new deal, which will keep the 30-year-old at Barca for the remainder of the season and the next four years, a £440m buyout clause has been inserted.

At global level the defender was part of the Spain squads that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. "In total, a player who identifies with the club more than anyone has earned 25 trophies".

Tipped to eventually serve Barça at boardroom level - his grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, was formerly a vice-president at the club - Pique spent four years at Manchester United between the ages of 17 and 21, a period that gave him valuable experience.

During his time at the club, he has won the 2010 World Cup and 2012 Euros.

He will be hoping to add to his medal collection in the current campaign and over the years to come, with Valverde's side perched back at the top of the La Liga standings and chasing down another Champions League crown.

Pique's new deal contains the highest release clause of any Barca player behind Lionel Messi, who signed a contract last November that includes a €700m buyout option.
