Flu season on target to break records

"These antiviral medications can reduce the severity of the flu and prevent serious flu complications", Koenig said.

"Pair these factors with an early start to the season, and we've got ourselves a bad year of influenza", Scherzer said. Influenza B can also affect older people and is the strain that most often infects children.

Of the cases, 406 were confirmed influenza and 311 people were hospitalized - with more than half in the 65-plus age group.

Officials with the Tarrant County Health Department are reporting three flu-related deaths. As well, not all provinces and territories keep track of hospitalizations due to influenza.

According to state data, previous year three people had died in influenza, but by the end of the February, it had taken 68 lives in California. "So probably in the next few weeks, we're going to continue to see increased activity".

If you're feeling like just about everybody you know is getting sick, staying home sick or just recovering from having been sick, you're not far off.

Even though Schneider said the flu back then was very different from today's flu virus, it still kills 250,000 people every year worldwide.

Last week it reported that as of December 30, there have been 13 reported cases of influenza-related intensive care unit admission.

Before 2017, the highest number of Swine flu deaths was reported in 2015 when 21 people died of Swine Flu in the state.

"That means increased hospitalizations and unfortunately, increased deaths", Lynette Brammer, an epidemiologist in the CDC's Influenza Division, tells us.

Of course, officials say it's never too late to get a flu shot.

"We still are entering the first peak month in this neck of the woods out here", Dr. Michael Johnson, director of community health at the Southern Nevada Health District, said Friday.

"If you're sick, try to stay home if you can", Manrique said.

It said, in case of mild fever with sore throat with or without bodyache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting, the patient neither requires Oseltamivir nor testing.

"I would urge anyone who has not gone out to get a vaccine to go out and get it", he said. He added, that if teachers get sick, the school is also ready to support them with substitute teachers available and on call.
