Facebook makes friends a priority in the News Feed

Facebook makes friends a priority in the News Feed

"We are doing a ton of work to reduce the frequency of bad content on Facebook", Hegeman said. Shares tumbled more than 4 percent during trading on Friday.

Facebook is now looking to become a big part of everybody's homes by launching "Portal", the social media giant's first foray into the hardware industry. "In the meantime, we will continue to negotiate with Facebook on developing a subscription model that can help expand the audience for and viability of quality journalism".

Now, after encouraging media organizations and local businesses to spend billions building up their social media presences on Facebook - including paying billions to Facebook itself to increase page "likes" and "follows" - Facebook is changing the game midstream. Pages whose posts prompt conversations between friends will see less of an effect. That score determines where it places the post in your News Feed, and how far down you have to scroll to see it.

While this may be another blow to publishers and brands, many already took the first big hit previous year.

According to CNBC, Twitter stands to gain from Facebook's decision when it comes to selling advertising, with traffic for media companies dependent on Facebook as a distribution platform, set to diminish. However, during that time, Facebook's unique audience has continued to grow. Now Facebook wants you to think about making sure your post is extra meaningful, and what the meaning of meaningful might mean to you, but most importantly what it means to Mark Zuckerberg's algorithm.

The changes promised aren't entirely new - Facebook has been shifting the content on its news feed toward posts from friends and family and away from brands and publications for more than a year.

Facebook said it quickly shut that capability down.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest the Kremlin and other agitators used Facebook's powerful viral machinery to sow discord among Americans: Posts meant to cause mischief about everything from Black Lives Matter to Texas secession helped exacerbate the country's political divisions during a turbulent election year. And in real life, people don't interact with brands as if they were close friends. "But those are the people who want to see ads".

It will most likely affect them negatively.

"What that tells me is that my ads are gonna get in front of less people, that's true", he said.

The US election in 2016 saw a string of adverts making misleading or factually inaccurate statements about political candidates gain traction on the site.

What does this mean for Pages and public content?

In other words, Facebook wants its products to be fun and useful for its users.

"We believe these changes will be beneficial to Facebook in the medium and long term".

Facebook Social media has made it really easy to find local, national, and global news. "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable", said Zuckerberg.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a post that the change is to make time spent on the platform "more meaningful" for its users.
