Apple App Store saw record $300 million purchases on New Year's Day

Both companies' app stores, however, pointed at the holidays' true victor: Amazon.

Apple has an annual tradition in early January of announcing how well its App Store is doing.

More granular numbers would have been handy, as it would have allowed us to compare them to Sensor Tower's report that Christmas Day had a total of $196 million in mobile spending, excluding China - up about 12 percent from a year ago.

Apple has been prioritising its services business, which includes the App Store, as global smartphone sales slow.

Also it would make the iteration of apps for iOS that much easier than before.

The Canadian software startup has reportedly been acquired to entice the contemporary app developers.

App Store® customers around the world made apps and games a bigger part of their holiday season in 2017 than ever before, culminating in $300 million in purchases made on New Year's Day 2018. If that's 70% of Apple's take - an estimation, given new payout rates for subscriptions - the App Store grossed about $37.8 billion in sales. During 2017, developers received $26.5 billion, up 30% on a year-over-year basis. According to industry experts, the latest acquisition has been done to further strengthen the company's iOS development platform.Buddybuild revealed the deal on its official site and indicated that as a direct result of the buyout initiated by Apple, there will be key changes to expect. That service today operates as Apple's online service for over-the-air installation and testing of mobile applications offered to developers in the iOS Developer Program.
