White House Plays Down Importance Of Flynn Guilty Plea

White House Plays Down Importance Of Flynn Guilty Plea

My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's office reflect a decision I made int he best interests of my family and our country.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged Flynn with "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the agency about his conversations with Russia's ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

In a statement, Flynn said he acknowledged that his actions "were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right".

This attempt to curb prosecution of Flynn was part of the chain of events that led to Mueller's appointment as special counsel. The prosecutors say that Flynn cleared his comments to Kislyak beforehand with an unnamed official who is described as "a senior official of the Presidential Transition Team" who was staying with Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

He was forced to resign that post in February, just weeks after the president took office, due to public concerns over his contacts with Russian Federation.

"Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn", said White House attorney Ty Cobb.

Flynn is accused of falsely telling the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he did not ask Kislyak to "refrain from escalating the situation in response to [the] sanctions".

Flynn, who served in Donald Trump's administration for just 24 days before being forced to resign for misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his Russian Federation contacts, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Flynn's admission was part of a statement of facts read out in court before Flynn pleaded guilty.

Besides a Dec. 29 conversation about sanctions, prosecutors also cite an earlier December meeting, in which Flynn asked Kislyak to delay or defeat a U.N. Security Council resolution.

Before the vote, the Israeli government lobbied the Obama administration to kill the resolution, but the efforts fell flat.

But having nailed Flynn - and gotten a plea agreement and Flynn's promise to cooperate with the investigation - the big question is whether Flynn can implicate President Trump, his campaign and his aides.

"The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year", he continued.

This guilty plea also comes on the heels of a new report about the President's efforts to silence the independent, bipartisan Senate investigation into ties between Trump associates and Russian Federation.

Mueller's investigators have interviewed members of Trump's family, his top advisors, business partners and lawyers over their actions. The next day, Trump met privately with then-FBI Director James B. Comey.

In January, the country's top intelligence chiefs said they had strong evidence showing Moscow had interfered in the campaign, by hacking and disinformation operations, specifically to boost Trump's chances of winning.

"Nothing that I heard, your honor", Flynn replied.

Next, Flynn can tell Mueller what, if anything, he knows about the contacts between Russian Federation and a series of Trump officials in 2016, including meetings, emails, phone calls and trips involving Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Carter Page, Roger Stone and George Papadopoulos.
