Vijay Rupani takes oath as Gujarat CM, inducts 19 ministers

Vijay Rupani, 61, is all set to swear in as Gujarat Chief Minister in the state capital Gandhinagar, in a ceremony that is twin as a huge show of power by the BJP.

Besides Rupani, Nitinbhai Patel took the oath of office and secrecy as Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister.

The duo's return to the roles they had in the previous state government ended speculation of a change of guard in Gujarat which the BJP only managed to retain with a simple majority earlier this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National president Amit Shah, Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Chief Ministers of BJP rules states, senior BJP leaders, business celebrities and spiritual leaders participated in the ceremony.

Among those who lost, two were cabinet ministers - Dalit leader Aatmaram Parmar and Chiman Shapariya. Key BJP ally Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is also present in the ceremony along with his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi.

New Rupani government will take oath today in the presence of PM Modi.

Those who have withstood the massive wave of Patel quota stir, too, have been rewarded as Cabinet ministers. Sources said that senior party leaders met Amit Shah to finalise the names of the ministers in Rupani's cabinet. 18 other BJP MLAs also took oath as ministers.

"People from all walks of life joined the oath taking ceremony in Gandhinagar to bless the team that took oath today".

"Political leaders, Chief Ministers of various states, our esteemed NDA allies and respected former Chief Ministers of Gujarat joined the occasion, making it even more special", the Prime Minister said.

Preparations underway for the swearing-in ceremony of the Vijay Rupani government at the secretariat ground in Gandhinagar.

Party leaders believe Rupani may induct a junior minister from south Gujarat's tribal belt, where the BJP matched its strong 2012 performance.
