Two students shot outside Graham-Kapowsin High School, sheriff's office says

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported that two students were shot at Graham-Kapowsin High School in Graham.

Graham-Kapowsin High, Nelson Elementary and Frontier Middle School were all placed in in lockdown in the immediate aftermath, and Eatonville School District was placed in temporary modified lockdown as a precaution because of proximity to the high school.

The high school was put in a lockdown that lasted for almost four hours before it was lifted at 6:15 p.m. and school buses began taking students home. One of the students was found in a parking lot near the football field. The other student was found in a locker room. But before the fight started, someone in the getaway vehicle fired multiple rounds, hitting the two students.

At 2:27 p.m., deputies responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls about shots fired near Graham-Kapowsin High.

In a tweet sent out early Wednesday, the sheriff's office said gunfire erupted during a fight near school grounds, and that the suspects, who were said to be black males, fled the scene in a green Chevy Impala. Authorities believe the shooting took place off campus and students ran back to the high school after being shot at.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said it was not believed the suspects were from the area.

There was no immediate word on the students' conditions, but officials say both were taken to Tacoma General Hospital. All three schools were locked down while deputies searched the buildings and grounds.

In a prepared statement, district officials offered their " thoughts and prayers" for the students involved in the shooting and their families, and gave reassurance that students on the campus "are safe". Graham-Kapowsin and the other schools that were put on lockdown will follow a normal schedule on Wednesday, which is a scheduled late start for the Bethel School District.
