Ravens' corner back Jimmy Smith suspended four games for PED use

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was hit with a four-game suspension due to violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Schefter also notes that since Smith is out for the season with his injury, he won't appeal the suspension and will serve it while out. This puts a smudge on what had been Smith's finest season in the NFL.

The suspension will cost Smith $182,352 (153,600 euros) in lost earnings, ESPN reported.

It's a pragmatic decision, since he suffered a torn Achilles yesterday and was done for the rest of the season anyway.

Smith, a first-round draft pick in 2011, has been hampered by injuries throughout his career. The seven-year veteran has missed several practices, but started all 12 games and is second on the team with three interceptions.

This development is a big blow to the Baltimore defense, as Smith has been an integral part of the team's sturdy defense that is playing a big role in keeping the team afloat.

Rookies Marlon Humphrey and Chuck Clark, as well as Maurice Canady should see more time with Smith out for the season. As it turns out, he may have had to sit out the final four games of the regular season regardless.

"He has played at an All-Pro level this year", Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters. Smith would've helped in covering the likes of Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon, T.Y.
