Pizza Hut will now deliver beer and wine

Pizza Hut began a trial run of beer delivery in downtown Phoenix on Tuesday. Wine will also be an option on the menu come January.

The delivery service will debut in Phoenix with six-packs of Anheuser-Busch brands, made by Arizona-based brewer Four Peaks.

When it expands the program beyond Phoenix, Pizza Hut expects to vary the menu according to regional preferences, a company executive told CNBC.

The company said in its press release it hoped to be a "one-stop-shop for customers looking to enjoy beer and wine with their pizza".

Pizza Hut reported flat US same-store sales in the latest quarter, when Domino's Pizza's domestic units reported a rise of 8.4 percent.

During October, the company announced its new delivery system that promises to keep pies hotter. Bourgeois added that Pizza Hut stores will need a license to distribute alcohol and delivery drivers must be 21 or older to deliver the goods. Taco Bell (which operates under the same parent company as Pizza Hut) has plans to open a bunch of "Cantina" locations over the next few years that serve alcohol, with the idea being that plenty of customers are already drunk when they get to Taco Bell, so the restaurant should give them more of what they want.

Rival Papa John's global sells beer and wine at a handful of locations in the western United States and at locations in Latin America, China and Russian Federation. Customers also have to have their IDs ready at the door to take advantage of delivery.
