Palestinians fire shells at troops on Gaza border; IDF retaliates

The Israeli army on Tuesday bombed a number of targets in the blockaded Gaza strip after rockets were fired from the Palestinian territory, according to the Israeli army. There were no casualties, he said.

A month ago, Israeli forces demolished a tunnel from the Gaza Strip to Israel, killing at least 12 Palestinian militants in the process. It proved to be a false alarm.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported the arrival of three injured men, adding that they had suffered light to moderate injuries because of an Israeli strike to the south of Gaza City.

Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, have fought three wars since 2008. Most of the dead were members of the terrorist organisation Islamic Jihad, which threatened retaliation.

The Israeli military twice on Thursday struck targets in Gaza after Israelis working on the border fence came under mortar fire, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said.

Israel blamed Islamic Jihad for the mortar fire. IDF tanks and warplanes then attacked four Hamas positions near the town of Beit Hanoun located in the northeastern part of the Gaza Strip.

"The Palestinian resistance has the full right to defend and respond to this risky escalation". A total of 67 Israeli soldiers and six Israeli civilians were killed in the conflict, while 2,251 Palestinians died, according to the United Nations.
