OU faces Georgia at the Rose Bowl in CFB Playoff

Ahead of the first Big 12 title game since 2010, conference partisans had spent most of the week sweating out the implications of putting the league's best team up for a rematch with a College Football Playoff bid almost in hand.

Georgia earned the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff and will face No. 2 Oklahoma in the semifinal.

If the Bulldogs can produce the same efficiency on defense in the Rose Bowl, they'll give themselves a significant chance of advancing to the national championship.

The Sugar Bowl will be this season's other semifinal, and will match Clemson and Alabama. But UGA would get revenge in the SEC title game, beating Auburn at its own game.

However, Georgia's biggest strength entering the Rose Bowl might not be its offense.

Oklahoma: The Sooners are appearing in their 19th consecutive bowl game and have gone 29-20-1 overall in bowl appearances.

The playoff committee has a definite problem on their hands: how do they pick the best four teams when there are potentially 6-8 deserving teams every season? In 2015, previously undefeated Iowa lost their conference championship game, and in turn, were dropped to 5 in the final rankings.

The full college football bowl schedule will be finalized later on Sunday. The Bulldogs moved up three spots in the playoff rankings as a result of the win. For just the second time ever, Georgia is traveling to Pasadena to play in the Rose Bowl. Saturday's 41-17 win over the Horned Frogs in the Big 12 title game was the latest and most emphatic sign that the Sooners' supposed Achilles' heel may not be as exposed as everyone thought: TCU was held to 317 yards, its third lowest output of the year, and were forced into two costly turnovers. They appeared in one previous Rose Bowl, beating UCLA 9-0 on January 1, 1943. The catch was they weren't doing this via Twitter or Instagram, but rather, they got their hands on Mayfield's cell phone number. The Crimson Tide lost 26-14 to Auburn to end the regular season, but its top win was against an LSU team outside the top 10. There's the contest of a first-year coach in Lincoln Riley and a second-year coach in Kirby Smart.
