"And Meghalaya would have been the leader of developed states if focus was stressed upon it [good governance]", said the prime minister. "The BJP's agenda is development, speedy development and all-round development of the state", Modi said.

The project, which cost Rs. 1,302 crore, was commissioned before Modi inaugurated it.

Earlier, Meghalaya BJP president also addressed a public rally.

As the poll managers put it, the Congress was in power in five of the eight States, that is Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Manipur, till past year.

"The road will establish a link between the two important towns of Shillong and Tura", Modi said even as he added that the travel time between Shillong and Tura would now be reduced to 8 hours.

Setting up of a venture capital fund worth Rs 100 crore for start-ups in the region, 100% central funding for development project in NE and rail connectivity to all state capitals in the region were other issues covered by Modi in his 38-minute speech.

We believe in 'transformation by transportation.' Improved connectivity will bring unparalleled opportunities for the Northeast. "When our ministers come here, they stay and meet the people".

Asserting that his government is committed to accelerate the pace of development in the northeast he said that central government has also started massive work on linking the northeastern states on rail and air link. The visit shouldn't be like you reached there in morning & return Delhi in evening.

The Prime Minister further added that the Centre had approved Rs 32000 crore for 4000 kilometers of National Highways across the North-East.

"Last year, I inaugurated the northeastern council meeting in Shillong", PM Modi added. Our initiative - the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) at your doorstep has added impetus to the development of the Northeast. PM Modi also added that to boost rail infrastructure in the North Eastern Region, the government at the Centre is executing fifteen New Rail Line projects of almost 1,400 km length that will cost around Rs 47,000 crore.

Adding that he wants to promote tourism for the state, PM Modi said, "During my last visit to Meghalaya in May 2016 I had talked about promotion of tourism in the State".

Prime Minister also quoted that Meghalaya will complete its 50 years of Constitution formation in 2022 and its importance.
