Lafayette announces former Alabama, Clemson assistant Billy Napier as new coach

A press conference will be held Monday at noon in the Cajundome.

"My family and I are excited and humbled for the opportunity to serve Cajun Nation and our Louisiana football program", Napier said in a statement.

In reports when he was being hired, the idea of Herm Edwards taking over at Arizona State is that the school would retain both of Todd Graham's coordinators and have Edwards act in more of a managerial and motivational role over them.

According to Sun Devil Source's Fabian Ardaya, Likens told his players that he meant to interview for the position, made vacant when Billy Napier accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana-Lafayette. Alabama won national titles twice while Napier was on staff with the Crimson Tide.

Athletic director Bryan Maggard made the announcement Friday in a University news release. "Coach Napier is highly respected within the coaching profession and brings tremendous experience from nationally-ranked programs".

Napier replaced Mark Hudspeth, fired after the Ragin' Cajuns finished 5-7 this season. He other stops as an assistant included one at Clemson from 2006-2010.
