Hornets head coach steps away from team to address health

Hornets head coach Steve Clifford will miss an undetermined amount of time to address his health, the team announced Wednesday. The Hornets defeated the Grizzlies 104-99.

Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford is stepping away from the team to address his health and will miss an undetermined amount of time, the National Basketball Association club said Wednesday.

Associate head coach Stephen Silas is serving as acting head coach in Clifford's absence.

Silas had coached Monday's game against the Orlando Magic, receiving a text at 2 p.m. that afternoon saying Clifford would be unable to coach.

The Hornets didn't give any further specifics out of respect for Clifford. He was even sidelined for most of the Warriors' playoff run last season but returned in time to coach them toward the championship.

The Hornets are 9-13 this season, Clifford's fifth with the franchise. Beyond that, he's been an assistant coach in the league nearly steadily since 2000, save for his time as a scout for the Washington Wizards. Charlotte hosts Golden State on Wednesday night. There is no timetable set for his return.
