Head of rescue operations stated in the massive Iran quake tragedy

Iranian state TV says a 6-magnitude quake has jolted a western region near the border with Iraq.

The first quake of magnitude 5.9 struck on Tuesday morning 56 km north of Kerman, a city with a population of more than 820,000. A magnitude 7.3 quake struck the border area between Iraq and Iran. It was more shallow - only 10 kilometer deep, a factor which amplifies the shaking, the survey said.

No deaths have been reported but 18 people were injured, state media said.

Chief of Crisis Management of Kermanshah province, Reza Mahmoudian, told Tasnim news agency that "there has been no report of casualties or damage in the cities or villages of Kermanshah so far".

"Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are extremely vulnerable to natural disaster shaking, though some resistant structures exist", the service said.Iran sits atop several fault lines, and Tuesday's quake comes less than a day after a 6.0-magnitude tremor struck the western province of Kermanshah along the border with Iraq.
