Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar sentenced to 60 years over child porn charges

McKayla and Erin Maroney sent in the eye-opening letters for the judge to read in private, instead of McKayla making her planned appearance in the Grand Rapids, Michigan courtroom to testify against Nassar, the former United States of America gymnastics doctor she says abused her under the guise of medical treatment for six years.

While executing a search warrant at his home in Holt, south of Lansing, MSU police discovered external hard drives with more than 37,000 images and videos of child pornography that had been thrown away in Nassar's garage can in front of his house on trash collection day.

Nassar has also pleaded guilty to 10 counts of sexual assault in two other cases in MI, admitting that he abused young athletes under the guise of offering medical treatment. Three of those charges related to victims who were under age 13.

McKayla Maroney's letters to the judge presiding over Dr. Larry Nassar's case, coupled with her mum's, detail years of sexual abuse that changed the woman she's become.

Nassar will be sentenced on the sex assault charges next month. "And that should terrify us". Federal Judge Janet Neff followed the government's recommended sentence Thursday. "The seriousness of his conduct, and the devastating impact it has had on the lives of so many, can not be overstated".

Nassar was the team physician for the Michigan State University gymnastics and women's crew teams, as well as an associate professor at MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The child porn was found on 54-year-old Larry Nassar's electronic devices in 2016 while he was being investigated over sexual assault. When he turned in his work laptop computer, officials said it had been wiped completely clean, including the operating system. Those counts carry possible 20-year prison terms, which could be imposed concurrently or consecutively. He'll be punished in January in state court for sexual assault.

Olympians Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas say they were victims when Nassar worked for USA Gymnastics and accompanied them at workouts or global events. Raisman said. "Why not look at what about the culture?"

Olympic level gymnasts had accused Nassar of molesting them when they were children.

Nassar worked at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics, the Indianapolis-based group that trains Olympians.

"Today the justice feels very incomplete", Denhollander said during a news conference broadcast by WZZM. Michigan State and USA Gymnastics are defendants in numerous lawsuits.
