Gov. Abbott orders flags to half-staff to honor fallen San Marcos officer

A police officer was fatally shot Monday afternoon while serving a warrant in San Marcos, about 30 miles south of Austin.

Mettz appears to have family in Blackfoot, Idaho, and he moved around the country, including Texas and New Mexico, prior to settling in San Marcos. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the officer shooting several times, according to KSAT ABC12.

- The San Marcos Police Department are reporting that a police officer has been shot and killed.

The officer was wearing a protective vest but died of his injuries at the Central Texas Medical Center. Stapp said the suspect, who also had at least one gunshot wound, surrendered after a brief standoff and was taken to a hospital. He will be placed back into police custody when he is medically stable. Copeland and other officers present were shot at by the suspect, "much like in an ambush type of situation". He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows that we're short-handed and need the help.

The San Marcos Police Department and Hays County Sheriff's Office is reportedly on scene. He is survived by his wife and four children, according to Dallas News. Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department. We remember the sacrifices our men and women in law enforcement make every day.

"There's a lot of great officers", Higgins said. We have to appreciate the fine men and women who are out there serving the public's interest in their jobs.
