Ericsson keeps seat at Sauber for 2018 alongside Leclerc

Leclerc is a current member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, and he is widely considered one of the future stars of Formula One. The title sponsorship deal means the team will be called Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 and the multi-year partnership comes with technical and commercial benefits.

Charles Leclerc has admitted his delight at moving up into Formula 1 in 2018 with the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team after being signed alongside Marcus Ericsson.

The long-awaited announcement was made by Fiat Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne at a presentation of Alfa Romeo's new partnership with the Swiss team on Saturday.

Giovinazzi will be the reserve driver instead, taking part in Friday practice sessions.

Wehrlein, who won five points in 2017, is left without a seat, with Williams the only team left with an opening following Felipe Massa's retirement.

Sauber has unveiled its concept livery for the 2018 Formula 1 season, in the wake of its collaboration with FCA brand Alfa Romeo. "I think the guns are loaded in a different way". The deal is understood to include an agreement for it to take at least one of Ferrari's young drivers next season.

"It's an wonderful opportunity for me but also for the team", said Ericsson, whose financial support has always been linked to Rausing and the Tetra Laval packaging group.

Charles Leclerc, 20, will make his Formula One debut as a full-time driver in the 2018 season driving for Sauber.
