Egyptian pop singer sent to prison for video that 'incited debauchery'

In the video she sings in a bra, licking different foods and pouring milk over a banana.

If Shyma's music video had aired on MTV in the United States, she likely wouldn't be facing jail time.

"I didn't imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone, as a young singer...who has dreamed from a young age of being a singer", she added.

"The Singer Shyma presents a lesson in depravity to youth", Egyptian newspaper Youm 7 wrote in an article.

A Cairo court ruled she was "inciting debauchery" and fined her 10,000 Egyptian pounds (£420).

The director of the clip was also handed the same sentence.

The authorities under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi have cracked down on some artists in Egypt using wide-ranging morality laws.

The video attracted more than a million views in a few days but drew criticism from conservatives in Egypt.

Shyma is not the first public figure to receive jail time for a music video.

After the video received negative headlines in Egypt last month, Shyma apologised for the clip in a now-deleted Facebook post.

Tuesday's verdict by the court of misdemeanors can be appealed.

Last year, three female dancers were sentenced to six months in prison after they were convicted of "inciting debauchery in music videos", the BBC reported.

Ten Egyptians were arrested in September for attending a concert in Cairo at which the rainbow flag, a symbol for the global LGBTQ community, was raised. She said she didn't mean for people to take it "in an inappropriate way".
