Conyers announces retirement amid sexual harassment allegations: 'My legacy can't be compromised'

- Rep. John Conyers announced Tuesday on a Detroit radio talk show that he is retiring from Congress, effective today.

The move comes amid numerous calls, including from Democratic leadership, for Conyers to step down in light of allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment against him.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee took to the House floor to read a letter by Conyers to his colleagues, saying he notified the Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi that he was vacating his seat.

Buzzfeed News reported on November 20 that Conyers had settled a complaint in 2015 from a woman who alleged she was sacked from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances.

While Democrats appear to be taking sexual harassment allegations seriously-even those filed against congressmen with so much power and sway they were considered "untouchable"-yesterday Donald Trump endorsed an alleged child molester (and confirmed bigot/theocrat/racist) running for the Senate in Alabama".

According to Grubbs' statement, Conyers called her and Brown the "Big Leg Cousins", and once came out of the bathroom of his home completely naked in front of Grubbs.

Conyers, who was first elected in 1964 and went on to become a founding member in 1971 of the Congressional Black Caucus, easily won re-election a year ago to his 27th term in the heavily Democratic district in and around Detroit. More and more women began to speak out against Conyers.

Ian Conyers, the grandson of Conyers's brother, plans to run for his seat, setting up an intra-family contest.

Elisa Grubbs made the allegation in an affidavit released by her attorney, Lisa Bloom.

He also hired civil rights heroine Rosa Parks to serve on his congressional staff in his Detroit office.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Rep. John Conyers will not seek re-election after his current term.

"Oh, absolutely not", Conyers said.

At least two other women who worked for him have accused him of sexual misconduct. He sponsored the bill to declare Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday a national holiday, as well as the Alcohol Warning Label, National Voter Registration and Hate Crime Statistics acts. "My client Marion Brown asks only for an acknowledgment and apology". Six years later, he became the top Democrat on Judiciary.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all of the citizens of the country of what your federal legislators are doing or not doing and any cost that may have been incurred as a result of that", added Conyers.

He added that he believed his great-uncle's constituents in MI would continue to support him and the rest of the family "as we continue to fight, as we have for leading up to a century".

Conyers's decision to step aside comes as Congress struggles to explain its secretive process for investigating and settling claims about sexual harassment and other workplace misconduct.
