'Annihilation' Trailer: Natalie Portman Goes on a Doomed Sci-fi Trip

Paramount Pictures has debuted an action-packed new trailer for Annihilation, an upcoming sci-fi film from the writer and director of 2015's Ex Machina, Alex Garland.

In Annihilation, a biologist searches for her missing husband while on an expedition with a secret agency and discovers a risky creature lurking in the wilderness.

While the new trailer dives deeper into the story than the Annihilation teaser before it, both previews emphasize the movie's surreal visuals and horror/thriller aspects over everything else. The book itself revolves around the expedition of four women on a mission to map Area X, a section of land in the United States secretly quarantined for abnormal activity.

Alex Garland has created an unbelievable sci-fi film with Ex Machina, and I'm ready for anything he has cooked up for moviegoers.

You can watch the trailer below. The "things aren't what they seem" unease is there in the trailer.

Annihilation releases February 23, 2018.

In September, Paramount released the first trailer for Ex Machina director Alex Garland's next science fiction thriller Annihilation, showing off an expedition entering a weird world. According to reports, producer disagreements - including a behind-the-scenes tug-of-war on how the movie should have ended - led to a stalemate that ultimately pushed the film's studio, Paramount, to cut the unconventional distribution deal with Netflix in order to help defray costs.

Here we get to see Portman's character trying to find out what has happened to her husband. When fellow producer Scott Rudin (Lady Bird) refused to force Ellison's recommended changes on the film, Paramount made a decision to seek out a new global distributor over its concerns about Annihilation's box office prospects.
