White House downplays George Papadopoulos' role in Trump campaign

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders will address the media at 1 p.m.

On Monday, Sanders tried to steer the news conference toward Republican plans to reform the nation's tax code.

Earlier today Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election revealed its first targets Monday, with a former campaign adviser to President Donald Trump admitting he lied to the FBI about his contacts with Russians. "In the hours after the indictment", The Associated Press says, "the president angrily told one confidant that Manafort had been a campaign "part-timer" who had only helped steer the convention and got too much credit for Trump's ability to hold onto the nomination".

She also criticized Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee for their contributions which funded research for a dossier alleging Mr. Trump's connections to Russian Federation. It is specifically about the campaign - MS. SANDERS: It has nothing to do with the activities of the campaign.

Additionally, Sanders' repetition of the word "volunteer" to show reduced significance rings hollow in light of the fact Manafort also worked on the campaign for free and is now accused of, amongst other things, "conspiracy against the US".

Mrs. Sanders said that the Trump campaign has always fully cooperated with the investigation, including turning over all of Mr. Papadopoulos's emails.

"It has nothing to do with the campaign's activities", she said of Papadopoulos' plea.

Throughout the briefing, Sanders continued to distance the Trump campaign from the activities of Manafort, Gates and Papadopoulos.

"What the Clinton campaign did, what the DNC did was actually exchange money, they took a meeting", Sanders said.

As she spoke, CNN cited its report that Trump was "seething" behind the scenes after reports of the indictments on Monday, and noted that Trump has frequently tweeted about the probe.
