Eminem opened the ceremony with his new song "Walk on Water", featuring Beyonce, though Skylar Grey filled on vocals for the live performance.

Grime star Stormzy stole the show at the 2017 MTV EMAs with his flawless performance of Big For Your Boots before taking home the award for Best UK and Ireland Act, but unknown to viewers at home his night got off to a very dramatic start.

The city was celebrated throughout the night, with Stormzy telling the crowd "This is London, this is your city" during his performance of hit single Big For Your Boots for which he arrived on stage in a police auto.

"I'm not really sure how I got this, 'cause I haven't had an album out in a few years" he quipped in his acceptance speech, adding "I got one coming though". Despite receiving six nominations - the most of any artist - Taylor Swift failed to win any awards. The night's big victor, Mendes, sung his best song-winning track "There's Nothing Holding Me Back" from a huge light box.

Irish rockers U2 were presented with a "Global Icon" award, in recognition of their decades at the top of the music industry.

Other highlights included Travis Scott rapping "Butterfly Effect" on top of an animatronic bird, United Kingdom hip-hop star Stormzy's "Big for Your Boots", and a new U2 song - "Get Out Of Your Own Way" - performed by Bono and company from Trafalgar Square.
