US Navy aircraft carriers operate off Korean Peninsula

"The training is aimed at restraining North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations and showing our military's strong willingness to act and military preparedness", the JCS said, quoted in the local press.

Tensions over the North's weapons programme have surged in recent months, as Pyongyang carried out a sixth nuclear test ─ by far its largest to date - and test fired dozens of missiles, some capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

Trump met with Japan and South Korea officials early last week. He added that Trump showed his "true nature as destroyer of the world peace and stability" on his "warmongering" visit.

Trump said in a speech at South Korea's parliament Wednesday, "Currently stationed in the vicinity of this peninsula are the three largest aircraft carriers in the world loaded to the maximum with magnificent F-35 and F-18 fighter jets".

"His current trip to our surrounding region is a warmonger's visit for confrontation to rid the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) of its self-defensive nuclear deterrence", North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on state media, Korean Central News Agency.

In response to that Trump tweeted from Hanoi on Sunday morning: "'Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old, ' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?"

The battle groups of the USS Ronald Reagan, the Theodore Roosevelt and the Nimitz will successively enter the exercise area during the drills that run until Tuesday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Also on Saturday, the United States and South Korean navies launched four days of joint drills off the east coast of South Korea.

The exercises will also involve 11 US Aegis ships and seven South Korean naval vessels, including two Aegis ships.

It is the first such United States triple-carrier drill in the region for a decade.

Tensions have been running high since North Korea test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 and flew ballistic missiles over Japan on August 29 and September 15.
