Twitter halts 'broken' verification system

The revelation that Twitter had lent its imprimatur to such a figure unleashed an angry response and, within hours, led the site to issue a statement pledging to temporarily halt new verifications as it reexamine the process.

Looks like I FINALLY got verified by Twitter.

Twitter has also been making a series of changes to address abuse and harassment on the social network.

You can submit a request for verification to Twitter, which says the blue checkmark "lets people know that an account of public interest is authentic."

This morning, Twitter responded - not be revoking Kessler's verified status, but by saying it was pausing all general verifications to resolve confusion around what being verified really means.

Twitter's official support account confirmed that its verification system had been "paused" following the backlash.

CEO Jack Dorsey recently renewed his pledge to wipe out violent groups, hate symbols and speech and tweets that glorify violence.

"Our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered", Dorsey wrote on his account.

Twitter's shares jumped last week when it said it could be on course to turn its first ever quarterly profit.

Twitter has not said why it verified Kessler's account.

The Daily Beast reported that Jason Kessler, the rally's organizer, received the Twitter's verification badge on Tuesday, and as of writing this, Kessler still has it.

Now, Twitter has chose to place verifications on hold, following complaints the ticks have added weight to the comments of some controversial users.

Twitter said it would overhaul its method for verifying users after facing a groundswell of outrage for confirming an avowed white supremacist.

"We should've communicated faster on this", he said, acknowledging that the "system is broken". "Who do you value more, users like me or him?"

The controversy over verification is just the latest incident to spark criticism of Twitter.
