Los Angeles International Airport is expected to release its Thanksgiving travel projections on Friday.

"So many more people are doing pre-holiday trips to take in all the experiences created to get people into the spirit of the season", said travel expert Jeanenne Tornatore.

In fact, some 45.5 million road-trippers will set off to grandma's house and other destinations during the Thanksgiving holiday, up from past year and the highest volume seen nationwide since 2005.

The Thanksgiving period will also see plenty of non-holiday related travel, with Wisconsin's gun deer hunting season taking place the entire holiday weekend. Today, the average is $2.58, but AAA expects the price will still be lower than what drivers were paying earlier this month.

The higher gas prices are not enough to deter Floridians from traveling this Thanksgiving, AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said. Already long travel times could quadruple, according to AAA. "And should help fuel consumer spending and generate a strong finish for the travel industry this year".

Two Florida cities - Orlando and Fort Lauderdale - are expected to rank among the county's top 10 Thanksgiving destinations, AAA said.

This year, about 51 million Americans will take planes, trains, automobiles and other modes of transit 80 kilometres or more to their holiday destinations, a 3.3 per cent increase over last year. Almost 51 million Americans are expected to travel next week, up just over three percent from past year.
