Texas church shooting: Facts minus speculation

Local and state law enforcement were responding to the scene.

The First Baptist Church is a fixture in Sutherland Springs, an area home to fewer than 900 residents, according the 2010 Census.

TV news anchors discussed the fact that the church, located about 40 minutes southeast of San Antonio, posts its services to YouTube, and thus there may be a recording of the shooting that investigators will be able to study.

A GUNMAN in full combat gear has killed and wounded dozens of people during a shooting spree at a small Texas church.

One hospital about 10 miles from the shooting says there "multiple" victims with gunshot wounds are being treated.

Television stations KSAT and KENS reported there were multiple victims and there was a large police presence at the church.

The shooting occurred on the eighth anniversary of the November 5, 2009 massacre of 13 people at the Fort Hood Army base in central Texas.

The shooting comes just over a month after a gunman in Las Vegas, firing down from a hotel room, killed 58 people and wounded hundreds attending an outdoor concert.

Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and other law enforcement agencies were either on the scene or traveling there.

Emergency officials are on scene and updated reports are expected.

"The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now", Ryan wrote on Twitter. He added that he is "monitoring the situation from Japan".

- It's unclear whether police shot the suspect or if he killed himself.

Contacted by Al Jazeera, the Wilson County sheriff was not immediately available for comment.

"It was rapid fire", Matula said.
