Republican Leaders: Alabamian Should Withdraw if Allegations Are True

"If that's true, he wouldn't belong in the Senate", said Sen.

In addition to Corfman, three other women told the Post Moore "pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18". Neither the 14-year-old nor her family members reported the encounters to authorities at the time and none of the subjects of the report accused Moore of a crime. Roy Moore was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney.

'I wanted it over with - I wanted out, ' the woman, Leigh Corfman, told the Washington Post as she recalled the experience.

Roy Moore and his wife Kayla greet supporters at an election-night rally in September.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement, "If these allegations are true, he must step aside". John McCain (R-Ariz.) said in a statement also calling for Moore to "immediately step aside", without using the "if true" caveat.

Corfman told the Washington Post, "I wasn't ready for that - I had never put my hand on a man's penis, much less an erect one".

"I wanted it over with - I wanted out", she remembers thinking. None of them said they had a sexual relationship with him.

Moore could conceivably step down if is he personally resigns, but that decision would have to go through the Alabama secretary of state-the state's chief elections official-who would then have to make a ruling as to whether or not Moore could withdraw from the race.

"I remember the further I got from my house, the more nervous I got, ' Corfman said. On a second visit, she said, he took off her shirt and trousers and removed his clothes", and then, Corfman said, Moore touched her and had her touch him.

The Washington Post says Corfman kept her story consistent over six interviews, and that the paper confirmed through court records that her mother did attend a hearing at the courthouse in February 1979.

Corfman, then 14, told the newspaper that Moore picked her up around the corner from her home and took her to his place where he told her she was pretty and began kissing her.

In it, McConnell called on Moore to step down if the allegations are true.

In Washington at least, few Republicans came to Moore's defense in the hours after the report was published. 'All I know is that I can't sit back and let this continue, let him continue without the mask being removed'.

Two of Corfman's friends say she told them about "seeing an older man", the Post reports, and one of them identified Moore as the man. Corfman's mother, Nancy Wells, 71, says her daughter told her of the encounters more than a decade later.

"This garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation", his campaign said in a statement.

Wendy Miller says she was 14 and working as a Santa's helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade. Moore was in his 30s and asked them all on dates, allegedly kissing at least two of them.

The report comes five weeks before Moore faces off against Democrat Doug Jones in the fiercely competitive special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions when he became United States attorney general.
