President Trump Demands Death Sentence for New York Terrorist

A day after the deadly terrorist attack in NY that killed at least eight people, President Trump said suspect Sayfullo Saipov should get the death penalty and that he would consider sending him to Guantanamo as an enemy combatant even though he has already been charged in civilian court. In another tweet, Trump said prosecutors "Should move fast".

If Saipov is convicted, executing him would play directly into the hands of Islamist armed extremists, who could then cast him as a martyr, Human Rights Watch said.

"In court papers, federal authorities said that Sayfullo Saipov told the FBI that he began planning his attack a year ago, though he settled on using a truck as a weapon only two months prior", The Washington Post reported. He was shot in the abdomen by a police officer, arrested and taken to a New York City hospital. He said the yet-to-be-assigned judge will question prospective jurors to ensure they can be fair despite anything they might have heard or read.

Officials said that the suspect picked Halloween for the attack in lower Manhattan as he knew more people would be outside.

Tuesday's assault was the deadliest in New York City since September 11, 2001, when suicide hijackers crashed two jetliners into the World Trade Center, killing more than 2,600 people.

Saipov could also offer information to authorities helpful beyond his case, because a suspected terrorist in custody also lets investigators delve more deeply into "the arc of their radicalization", Miller said.

But Trump argued Wednesday that the USA justice system takes too long.

The president lamented Tuesday morning that the judicial process of sending Sayfullo Saipov as an "enemy combatant" to the military facility in Cuba would "statistically" take longer than going through the federal system.

Trump has already seized on the deadly attack, which left eight dead and 12 injured, to call for tighter immigration laws in the United States.

"We're so politically correct that we're afraid to do anything", he said.

"We want a merit-based program where people come into our country based on merit and we want to get rid of chain migration", Trump added, telling reporters that Saipov had been allowed to bring in 23 other people as a "primary point of contact".
