Police officer, another person dead after apparent shooting during IL traffic stop

A Rockford police officer was killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning after a traffic stop led to an apparent shooting.

Cox's body was escorted from the hospital to the coroner's office by a procession of hundreds of police officers from jurisdictions across the area.

About two blocks of where the initial stop was made a deceased person was found inside of a wrecked vehicle.

Jaimie Cox, 30, influenced a traffic to stop close East State Street and Dawn Avenue in Rockford around 1 a.m. Sunday before making a "brief radio transmission demonstrating he required help", O'Shea said at a news gathering. Inside the vehicle, investigators tell 23 News a body was found.

Cox joined the Rockford department in December 2016, said a city spokeswoman. Another person, who hasn't been identified, was found dead inside the crashed vehicle, police said.

Cox was rushed to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, O'Shea said, where he was pronounced dead. That person's identity has not been released.

The area around State Street, Alpine Road, Dawn Avenue, and Turner Street are blocked off as the investigation continues.

The Winnebago County Coroner has not yet released the cause of death for Officer Cox or Patterson.

"We don't feel the public's in jeopardy right now", O'Shea said.

It is believed by Rockford investigators, that Officer Cox fired his weapon during the scuffle.

The Rockford Police Department also expressed its gratitude for the outpouring of support is has received.
